Sandy First Appearance:Page 1 "Punk Angel"
This girl has fleshy wings attached from her shoulders to her knees. She
cannot wear regular clothes so she wears a long coat to cover her wings.
She is afraid to learn how to fly so the wings are more of a burden to her
than anything else. She lives with two other girls, M and Jazz, and her
daughter, Swift (like the bird), who is three and starting Kindergarten.
Sandy is extremely intelligent but socially inept. She spent most of the
last three years learning to speak English and care for herself and her
daughter. She doesn't remember anything before her daughter was born. Her
experience with the outside world is minimal. She barely recognizes that
there is a government and certainly does not believe it applies to her. She
attacks people (physically and verbally) because she believes they can
defend themselves the same way she can. She is terrified of men and has no
idea why.
Racheal Jullian First Appearance:Page 1 "Punk Angel"
Racheal owns Fallen Angels Used Books, a small, community bookstore in North
County Saint Louis near University of Missouri Saint Louis (UMSL). Racheal
deals mainly with hard to find, out of print books and buys crates of
books from individuals, libraries and even bookstores when they clean out
their inventory. She has contacts all across the United States, Canada and
parts of Great Britain. She has been doing this type of business for at
least ten years.
Racheal often characterizes people by the types of books they like to read.
Paula O'Brennin First Appearance:Page 1 "Punk Angel"
Paula owns the Christian Bookstore next door to Fallen Angels Used Books.
She started the business with the help of her husband many years before but
when Mr. O'Brennin died, she moved in next to Racheal. The two immediately
clashed and no one really remembers what started it. Paula tried to get a
petition signed to get Racheal to change the name of her store. No one
would sign. Paula tried to sue Racheal in court and lost. The pair have a
lot of bad blood between them and neither will give any ground. Thus the
situation has stood for three years.
Paula is a grandmother. She is active with her church and community. She
is a big believer in inspirational literature and keeps the television tuned
to Christian channels when it's turned on.
Rob Stazker First Appearance:Page 5 "Punk Angel"
Rob is a typical beat cop who has been patrolling the area around Fallen
Angels Used Books for a number of years. He has become well acquainted with
Racheal and Paula and their history.
On Page 123 he revealed that he was something more than a beat cop. In Sandy's world he is known as the Arbiter.
Rebecca Aldritch - Shelly First Appearance:Page 10
Shelly is a High School student. She is exceptionally shy and spends most of
her time with books. She doesn't have any friends so she makes up worlds
for herself to live in and populates the worlds with dragons, unicorns,
knights, horses and princesses. She usually casts herself in the role of
the princess.
Shelly usually wanders through Fallen Angels Used Books around lunch time
instead of after school. Her parents won't let her stay out late because
she is at that age.
On Page 79 Shelly ran away from home taking Sandy's coat, a backpack and her bear, Mr. Bean.
Sylvester First Appearance:Page 15
Sylvester is Racheal's best customer. He comes in at least once a week for
new books and stood by her during the court battle with Paula. He once
vowed in front of a judge that he would keep Fallen Angels Used Books open
single-handedly if necessary. Sylvester is one of Racheal's best friends
but there is no romantic involvement.
Sylvester is interested in anything occult and fancies himself to be a
wizard of sorts. However, he reads science fiction. Sylvester is a
freelance journalist and writer, spending most of his time engrossed in his
work. He lives in a reasonably large house near the edge of the city.
Sylvester is currently searching for Mars.
Martian Girl First Appearance:Page 16
Martian Girl is a small, homeless girl who spends her days wandering between
Saint Charles and Forest Park, muttering to herself in Martian (hence the
name). Ask her and she'll tell you that she made up the language. She got
bored waiting for the Martians to land and she wanted to be able to speak to
them when they got here. Normally, a girl her size would be quickly
victimized but she's very capable of taking care of herself. She is also
more aware of her environment than first impressions would dictate.
Mars and Sandy look similar enough to be sisters but as far as they know
they are not related.
